Superego, infrayou*

The current pandemic has unleashed surprise and stupefaction at the bursting in of an ancient sense of tragedy we had forgotten. COVID – just like AIDS did before – has reminded us, despite the narcissistic promise of unlimited joy, that death exists. In fact, the company Calico, a subsidiary of Google, was working hard to solve death. The most sophisticated version of post-humanism proposes an agenda of happiness and immortality based on self-care: your extreme hygiene. In the installation Tu extrema higiene (Your extreme hygiene, 2017), Javier Peñafiel composes a score by means of the traces of coexistence of a relationship reduced to mere spectres of a libidinal memory. The objects, paintings, photographs, drawings and texts hold a melodramatic conversation in which the toothbrush – an allegory of self-care and life as a couple – is an eyewitness to the end of the discussion: superego, infrayou.

The narcissism of your extreme hygiene is based on Roberto Esposito’s idea of immunitas as self-protection and the denial of life (Esposito, 2005). Immunity policy and disinfection technology are part of the violence with which refugees and migrant foreigners are received at European borders, although this has only gained in popularity after the recent pandemic. As already mentioned, the mask is the new biopolitical frontier (Preciado, 2020). Beyond the necessary care of oneself seen as care of the other, the setting up of physical or symbolic borders as part of an extreme immune policy isolates people from the outside world, extends the imaginary of the other as an enemy and gives rise to the most absurd nationalist projects. As a refugee, Bertolt Brecht knew full well that we only learn from others, and that refugees are alsothe best dialectical school, because they only study change (Brecht, 1967).

Furthermore, the predominance of the superego – a feeling of moral superiority that believes it is legitimized to blame others – has in our days engendered a revolutionary perspective: victimhood. As Daniele Giglioli said, “the victim is the hero of our times. Being a victim endows you with prestige, demands people listen to you, promises and promotes recognition, and activates a powerful generator of identity and right […]” (Giglioli, 2017). Of course, we are not concerned here with questioning a truth, but rather with pointing out the dramatic use of certain stories, which, coming back to the Protestant tradition, abolish judgment and any possibility of redemption. In the face of the growing deterioration of human relations in an age of extreme immunity, it is important to keep in mind that every relationship implies a degree of negativity, that opening up to the other means exposing oneself, contaminating oneself, disarming oneself, or as the poet Hölderlin said, “where the danger is, also grows the saving power”.
